Why character counts differ between networks

A character is not one thing. Most networks count Unicode code points, so an accented letter counts once. Bluesky counts graphemes, what you see as one symbol, so a family emoji built from several code points is one. TikTok counts UTF-16 units, where many emoji count as two. YouTube limits descriptions by UTF-8 bytes, where one emoji can take four.

X uses weighted counting against 280: every link counts as 23 whatever its real length, and most emoji and Chinese, Japanese and Korean characters count double.
