Why your YouTube banner does not fit

YouTube asks for one 2560 by 1440 pixels image at 16:9 and shows a different part of it on each kind of screen. TVs show the whole thing. Computers show a full-width strip through the middle, 2560 by 423 pixels. Tablets show 1855 by 423. Phones show little more than the centre.

The only area every device shows is the centre 1546 by 423 pixels. Put your channel name, logo and any text there. Everything outside it is background: it should look fine cut off, because on most screens it is.

That is why a banner made at the right size can still look wrong: its text was placed for the full image. A banner smaller than 2560 by 1440 is scaled up and looks soft, and YouTube recompresses every upload. Export a PNG for text and flat colour, or a high quality JPEG for photos, under the 6 MB limit.

The upload was smaller than 2560 by 1440 pixels and YouTube scaled it up, or it was heavily compressed. Export at the full size, as a PNG if it has text or flat colour, under the 6 MB limit.
Is my image uploaded anywhere?
No. Your image opens in your browser and is processed on your own device; it is never sent to Posty or anyone else. Saving a download re-encodes the image, which also strips the EXIF data your camera stored, including GPS location. You do not need an account.
