Posty vs BufferDMs, approvals and publishing

Posty vs Buffer is a question of what happens around publishing. Buffer replies to comments and offers approvals on its Team plan. Posty brings comments and DMs into an inbox and gives each client a workspace for planning and sign-off. Choose around the work your team needs to complete.

Which one fits your team

Choose Posty if

  • You answer customers in Instagram, Facebook or Bluesky DMs.
  • Each brand or client needs its own workspace, approval rule and inbox.
  • Your brands publish to many networks, where per-channel pricing adds up.

Choose Buffer if

  • One person publishes to a few channels and the free plan or $5 a channel is enough.
  • You publish to X, Mastodon or Google Business Profile.
  • You reply to comments and never need DMs in the same tool.

Per channel against per workspace

Buffer charges for every connected channel: $5 a channel a month on Essentials and $10 on Team, billed annually. Posty charges each workspace, one per brand or client, whatever it connects: Starter is $24 a month billed annually for up to 10 accounts, and Growth has no account limit. A brand on five networks costs $50 a month on Buffer Team and $32 on Posty Growth.

Direct messages, or comments only

Buffer’s community inbox replies to comments on every plan, and its help centre says Buffer does not offer direct messaging. Posty’s inbox brings in comments and messages on every paid plan, from Bluesky, Facebook, Instagram, Threads and YouTube. If customers write to you in DMs, Buffer needs a second tool beside it.

Who signs off, and on which plan

Buffer’s approvals are on the Team plan: contributors request approval, and owners or full access users approve. Its agency guide sets clients up as Buffer users with their own login. Posty includes required approval from Growth. Clients join their own workspace with client visibility and approve there, and Accelerate asks your team before the client.

A free plan that schedules, or one that doesn’t

Buffer’s free plan schedules to 3 channels, with 10 posts per channel waiting at a time. Posty’s Free plan includes Link in Bio only. Scheduling starts on Starter at $24 a month billed annually, after a 7 day trial that needs a card and bills automatically unless you cancel.

The networks each one publishes to

Buffer publishes to X, Mastodon and Google Business Profile, which Posty does not. Posty publishes to Discord and WordPress, which Buffer does not list, and uploads long-form YouTube videos as well as the Shorts Buffer lists. Both cover Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, LinkedIn, Threads, Pinterest and Bluesky.

Moving from Buffer to Posty

Posty does not import from Buffer, so the move is done by hand. Group your Buffer channels by brand or client first; each group becomes a workspace.

  1. 1

    Group your channels into workspaces

Buffer lists channels; Posty groups them. Create one workspace per brand or client and set its timezone, so each post publishes at the local time you planned.

  2. 2

    Connect the social accounts

Sign in to each network through its own consent screen. Nobody shares a password, and each account belongs to one workspace.

  3. 3

Invite the team and set the approval rule

Invite your team with the roles they need, choose the approval rule for each workspace, and invite clients with client visibility.

  4. 4

    Move the queue across

Recreate the posts still in your Buffer queue, then remove them from Buffer so nothing publishes twice.

Questions about Posty and Buffer

Is Posty cheaper than Buffer?
It depends on how many channels each brand has. One person on three channels pays $15 a month on Buffer Essentials, billed annually, less than Posty Starter at $24. With approvals, two brands on five networks each pay $100 a month on Buffer Team and $64 on Posty Growth.
Can Posty answer Instagram DMs?
Yes. Posty’s inbox brings in Instagram comments and DMs on every paid plan, alongside conversations from Facebook, Threads, Bluesky and YouTube. Buffer replies to comments only.
Does Posty support X or Mastodon?
No. Posty does not publish to X, Mastodon or Google Business Profile. Buffer supports all three.
How do clients approve posts in each?
On Buffer, clients are set up as users on the Team plan, each with a Buffer login. On Posty, clients are invited to their own workspace with client visibility and sign in to approve there; they count towards that workspace’s people.
How do the free plans compare?
Buffer’s free plan schedules to 3 channels for 1 user, with 10 scheduled posts per channel at a time. Posty has a 7 day trial of Starter, Growth or Accelerate, once per team. It needs a card, and Stripe bills the plan you chose when the trial ends unless you cancel. The Free plan includes Link in Bio only, not scheduling.
