How a panorama carousel works

A carousel shows one slide at a time, full width. If slide two starts exactly where slide one ends, swiping feels like panning across one wide picture. That only works when every slide is the same shape and the cuts are exact to the pixel, which is hard to get right by hand.

Each slide here is 1080 by 1350 pixels for 4:5 or 1080 by 1080 pixels for 1:1. A three slide 4:5 panorama therefore uses an image 3240 by 1350 pixels. A smaller photo is scaled up to fill the slides and looks softer, so export the panorama at full resolution.

Pick the slide count by the photo’s shape. If the panorama is shallower than the slides, its top and bottom stay whole and its ends are trimmed; if it is deeper, the top and bottom are trimmed. Keep faces and text away from the cuts, because each slide is also seen on its own.

Only the first slide appears on your profile grid, cropped to a centred 3:4. Make it a strong picture by itself, so people have a reason to swipe.

How do I split a panorama for an Instagram carousel?

How many slides can a panorama carousel have?
2 to 10, the range Instagram’s publishing API accepts for one carousel. A very wide panorama needs more slides to keep its full width; a shallower one fills fewer slides without losing its top and bottom.
Should the slides be 4:5 or square?
4:5 slides are taller, so each takes more of the screen and the panorama shows bigger. 1:1 slides suit a very wide, shallow panorama that would otherwise lose too much height.
Why does my panorama not line up between slides?
The slides were cut at different sizes, or Instagram cropped them to a different shape. Cut every slide at the same exact size, keep one shape for all of them and post them in order.
Is my photo uploaded anywhere?
No. Your photo opens in your browser and is processed on your own device; it is never sent to Posty or anyone else. Saving a download re-encodes the image, which also strips the EXIF data your camera stored, including GPS location. You do not need an account.
