Why Instagram crops your photos, and the sizes that avoid it
Instagram’s feed accepts photos between 4:5 portrait and 1.91:1 landscape. Anything taller or wider is cut to fit. The sizes that use the full width are 1080 by 1350 pixels for portrait, 1080 by 1080 pixels for square and 1080 by 566 pixels for landscape. Portrait fills the most screen as people scroll, which is why so many accounts use it.
Since January 2025 your profile grid shows every post as a centred 3:4 rectangle rather than a square. A 4:5 portrait loses a thin strip from each side on the grid, a square loses more, and a landscape photo loses most of its width. Keep faces and text in the middle of the frame and they survive both views.
The Instagram app now accepts 3:4 uploads at 1080 by 1440 pixels, which fill a grid tile exactly. The Instagram publishing API does not: it accepts only 4:5 to 1.91:1, so every scheduling tool, Posty included, has to publish a 4:5 version. This tool makes both, so you can post from the app or schedule from anywhere.
Through its API, Instagram takes feed photos as JPEG files up to 8 MB, and it recompresses whatever you send. Uploading at exactly 1080 pixels wide leaves Instagram less resizing to do, so edges and text stay sharper.

- What is the Instagram post size?
- A portrait post is 1080 by 1350 pixels (4:5), a square post is 1080 by 1080 pixels and a landscape post is 1080 by 566 pixels (1.91:1). Stories and Reels are 1080 by 1920 pixels (9:16). Portrait is the best default for the feed because it takes the most room on screen.
- How do I crop a photo for Instagram without losing the edges?
- Cropping always removes something. If the whole photo has to show, use the Instagram No Crop tool instead: it fits the photo inside the frame and fills the gap with white, a colour or a blurred copy of the image.
- Should I post 4:5 or 3:4 on Instagram?
- If you post from the Instagram app, 3:4 fills the profile grid tile with nothing trimmed. If you schedule, use 4:5: the publishing API rejects anything taller, so a 3:4 photo cannot go out through a scheduler. A 4:5 post loses only a thin strip from each side on the grid.
- What is the Instagram grid crop 3:4?
- Your profile grid shows each post as a centred 3:4 slice. The full post still appears when someone opens it or sees it in the feed. This tool draws that slice on every size, so you can check what your grid will show before you post.
- Is my photo uploaded anywhere?
- No. Your photo opens in your browser and is processed on your own device; it is never sent to Posty or anyone else. Saving a download re-encodes the image, which also strips the EXIF data your camera stored, including GPS location. You do not need an account.
