Connect WordPress to Postyapprove on your site

For a self-hosted site, you approve Posty on your site’s own WordPress screen, which creates an Application Password for Posty without you copying anything. Sites on WordPress.com or connected through Jetpack sign in with WordPress.com.

What you need
WordPress 5.6 or later and a user that can publish
Where you sign in
Your own site’s WordPress approval screen
How long it lasts
Until the Application Password is revoked

Before you connect WordPress

Have these ready and the connection takes a couple of minutes.

WordPress 5.6 or later over https
Posty finds your site through the WordPress REST API, at /wp-json/ or ?rest_route=/, and the site address must start with https://.
A user that can publish
Posts go out as the user who approves Posty, with their name as the author. Author can publish posts, upload images and add tags; Editor can also publish pages. Contributors and Subscribers cannot publish, so Posty will not connect them.
A user just for Posty, if you like
A separate user keeps your own login out of it and can be removed at any time. WordPress approves Posty for whoever is signed in, so sign out first if that should be someone else.
A Posty plan that includes channels
Free includes Link in Bio only. Starter connects up to 10 channels per workspace; Growth and Accelerate have no channel limit. You can try any paid plan for 7 days, once per team: the trial needs a card and bills automatically unless you cancel.
A role that can connect channels
Only roles with permission to connect channels see the WordPress tile on Channels. Roles and permissions

What Posty asks WordPress for

Posty never asks for your WordPress login password. It uses:

An Application Password
WordPress creates it for Posty when you approve. It only works for the REST API, not for signing in, and you can revoke it under Users, Profile, Application Passwords.
A check of the user’s role
When you connect, Posty checks the user can edit and publish posts and upload files, which an Author can.
A pasted password, only if approval is blocked
Some security plugins and hosts hide the approval screen. Then choose Application Password in the dialog: create one in WordPress while signed in as the user Posty should post as, and paste it with the site address and username.

If you decline on the approval screen, nothing is created and Posty shows “WordPress connection cancelled: the request was not approved.”

Connect WordPress step by step

  1. 1

    Open Channels and choose WordPress

In your workspace, open Channels and select the WordPress tile under Connect a channel. Posty opens Connect WordPress, which asks how your site is hosted.

    • WordPressConnect site
The WordPress tile on the Channels page, which reads: Connect site
  2. 2

    Choose Self-hosted WordPress

Pick Self-hosted WordPress, marked Recommended. For a site on WordPress.com or connected through Jetpack, pick WordPress.com instead and choose the site on WordPress.com’s screen.

  3. 3

    Enter your site address

Type the address, starting with https://, and select Continue to WordPress. Posty checks the site’s REST API answers before it opens the approval screen.

    Self-hosted WordPress

Approve Posty on your own site, no password to copy

    Site addresshttps://example.com
    BackContinue to WordPress
    Posty’s Self-hosted WordPress dialog.
  4. 4

    Sign in and approve Posty

In the window that opens, sign in as the user Posty should post as and approve the request. WordPress creates the Application Password and sends you straight back. Finish within 15 minutes.

Check it worked

When it works, Posty shows

“WordPress connected successfully!”

The site appears under Connected channels, named after the site with the WordPress user underneath. Its picture is the site’s Site Icon when it has one.

Reconnect WordPress

Application Passwords do not expire, so the card says it stays connected automatically.

If the password is revoked or a plugin starts blocking the login, select Reconnect. The site address is filled in; approve as the same user and Posty removes the Application Password it made before. Disconnecting removes Posty’s Application Password too, while one you pasted stays until you revoke it.

Fix common WordPress connection errors

Each message below is what Posty shows, followed by what to do about it.

“This WordPress site has no app approval screen. Connect it with an Application Password instead.”
The site runs WordPress older than 5.6, or Application Passwords are switched off. Update WordPress or switch them back on, or choose Application Password in the dialog and paste one you create.
“Could not find that WordPress site. Check the address and try again.”
Use the address visitors see, starting with https://. If it is right, a plugin may be disabling the REST API, which Posty needs at /wp-json/ or ?rest_route=/.
“That WordPress user can’t publish posts or upload images. Give it the Author role (or Editor to also publish pages), then connect again.”
Change the user’s role under Users in WordPress, or approve as a different user.
“WordPress did not accept the new password. A security plugin may be blocking the login; try connecting with an Application Password instead.”
Some security plugins and hosts strip the Authorization header Posty sends. Allow Application Passwords in the plugin, or ask your host to pass the header through.
“That is a different WordPress site or user from the channel you are reconnecting. Approve as the original user.”
Sign out of WordPress, sign in as the user the channel was connected with, then reconnect.
“The WordPress connection expired. Start it again.”
Approval has to finish within 15 minutes. Select Reconnect, or the WordPress tile, and start again.
“Upgrade to connect”
The workspace has used every channel its plan includes. Starter connects up to 10; Growth and Accelerate have no limit. Disconnect a channel you no longer use, or change plan.
